Steelpan is part of the St. Maarten cultural heritage and as such is a very powerful medium to reach a large community. The main goal of this project in round 3 is to go “a step further” after round 2 and expand the program from 5 to 7 groups including more students from both primary and secondary schools. This will impact 140+ children/youth who will have weekly classes during 2022. With the increase in classes, more students will benefit from the investment in new steelpans.
In 2004 the foundation was established by Isodore York, aka Mighty Dow, with the main objective to educate, preserve and promote the art form of steelpan music on St. Maarten. The foundation has also has a steel plan/music curriculum taught in several primary and secondary schools on the island as well as after school programs.
