The Gym at St. Maarten Academy is used by the school and many other sporting organizations that require indoor facilities such as badminton and volleyball clubs. The gym floor is in bad condition partially as a result of damage suffered from hurricane Irma and needs to be replaced.
The grant will be used to replace the gym floor and install two large hurricane shutters at the entrance that were damaged by hurricane Irma.
The main beneficiaries of this project are the children of the St Maarten Academy and the many sports clubs who use the facility. The Academy expects to increase the usage rate by 40% thereby catering to approximately 1,000 persons.
The St. Maarten Academy has been in existence since 1974. It was then the first secondary school with English as the language of instruction. The group of schools, Academic and Preparatory Secondary Vocational education (PSVE) referred to as “St. Maarten Academy” operates under the Foundation for Academic and Vocational Education (FAVE).
