The daycare and afterschool facilities were completely destroyed by hurricane Irma. The entire inventory was lost and the playground was ravaged. Reading Rainbow was only able to partially reopen in January 2020. This project focuses on rebuilding the section for older children, adding devices to assist with online homework and digital teaching, upgrading the sanitary facilities and refurbishing the playground areas for safe playing.
Reading Rainbow Foundation is located in Backstreet (Philipsburg). The Foundation caters to preschoolers and after-schoolers activities and focuses on early stimulation for ages 2-11. The school was closed in September 2017 due to the devastation caused by hurricane Irma and reopened in January 2020 only to face the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. There are currently 15 children at the school and after the R4CR project the capacity will increase to 25. The fees are kept at a minimum to accommodate single working mothers and single earner households.
