One of the Aids Foundation’s most important programs is the provision of medication to uninsured persons living with HIV who cannot acquire them otherwise due to high cost of medicines and the fact that they lost their work/income leading to loss of insurance. Since Irma the foundation has assisted 45 persons with financial assistance of several organizations. With the financing of medication, the AIDS Foundation can continue its program for the upcoming six months. The initially requested amount was based on more than 6 months and therefore the Aids foundation was requested to adjust the budget based on a half year project. In this program 20 persons will be assisted where the number may fluctuate up or down when persons regain insurance.
The Foundation constantly tries to stimulate their clients to find a job with medical insurance coverage or assist persons to obtain governmental social welfare coverage.
The St. Maarten Aids Foundation was founded in 1990 with the purpose of preventing the transmission of HIV and other STIs and reducing their negative impact, including stigma and discrimination, while providing compassionate care, practical support services, and advocating on behalf of those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.
